Checking mixes with polarity inverted L and R channel

Postby Joris J » August 12th, 2014, 4:51 pm

So I've been rereading some old articles and reviews about monitor controllers, and on more than a few occasions it was mentioned that as a negative that you could not monitor with the left or the right channel inverted. Now I understand the need to monitor in mono, but until now I've never checked my mixes with one side inverted.

I assume that you would invert the polarity on one side to listen how your mix would sound on a system where one of the speakers is hooked up incorrectly. So what am I supposed to listen for? Elements in the mix that are sounding thin or are missing? What would cause these problems and how would you typically fix them? How important is this anyway? Again I'm 100% convinced about checking mixes in mono, so I'm keen to learn about this!

Typically, you'd invert and switch to mono.

Yes, you switch to mono and invert one side to see what disappears.
